The architectural practice Penoyre and Prasad designed the award winning Childrens Eye Centre extension to Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. Unlike many NHS projects it is an innovative, attractive and welcoming building, which fits in to its surroundings surprisingly well.
Carl Stahl were employed to design, manufacture and install the cable system used on the glazed exterior as the structural support to a series of aluminum fins that create an interesting and textured façade.
10mm diameter stainless steel cables were installed in continuous lengths from the roof and swaged (terminated) on site to ensure exact lengths were achieved, eliminating costly mistakes. The clamps were applied retrospectively to allow the fins to be adjusted to the correct position and the pattern created exactly as envisaged by the architects.
